Alice was only six when she went blind on her father's newest construction site.
Ten years of guilt have weighed down hard on her parents, so when they are contacted about a breakthrough new surgery that might bring back her vision, they jump at the chance without consulting their daughter. Alice goes through with the surgery, largely against her will, afraid of the monumental changes her world will undergo if she regains her sight.
The operation is successful; within just a few days, she starts to see lights, and after a few weeks, her vision has completely returned. What she doesn't expect to see is the grotesque, scarred features glaring back at her in the mirror. Devastated and disenchanted, Alice crumbles into crushing self-loathing, and is eventually drawn to do the unthinkable: take her sight back again.
Wow, this is a really interesting take. There are a lot of stories involving blind people getting surgery, but you don't see one where the person doesn't actually want the sight back. Good luck with it!
ReplyDeleteits like she had this idea of who she was and what she looked like and then she actually sees what she really looks like and its not at all like she imagined and so on top of being a 16 year old girl, her whole world has been blown. write it.
ReplyDeleteOR the girl enters therapy and learns to love herself and really "see" beauty... not as dramatic, but maybe healthier? Oh, and it didn't escape my notice that the parents not only caused her blindness but then gave it back against her will. a lot of angst with the parents.... :-)
