I used to be so fun, didn't I? Going back and reading things from last year, I realized that I wasn't always this needy and wordy. We used to have fun together, you and I.
Let's do that again.
Here's a picture of me being really good at playing a wooden flute.
Happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day, all you Americans! Today, we celebrate one of the men who was at the forefront of the civil rights movement in the 1960's, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. If anything, you know him from his "I Have A Dream" speech or his "Letter from Birmingham Jail". If you're unfamiliar with either of those, I highly, highly recommend that you read them. King was a masterful rhetorician as well as a civil rights activist and father, and anybody can benefit from studying the words that he left behind.
But actually, I'm not going to talk about MLK today. I could easily take an entire blog post to talk about the many messages of Dr. King, as well as the example that he was and is as a man of solid conviction and forward-thinking social reformation. But I think that a blog is not a place for a history lesson, or a discourse on a person, no matter how famous they may be. My aim here on DAiNGER! is to entertain, and while some of you might find my thoughts on Dr. King interesting, I'm going to venture a guess that most would not.
It's the beginning of Spring Break, and I've had a lovely, fun-filled day. I woke up at 6:09am because my roommate was snoring. I squeaked the door of our mini-fridge, which always stops her snoring, then went back to bed and woke up again at 9, when somebody loudly knocked on the door. I gave up on sleeping after that and took a shower instead, starting my intensely mellow Saturday.
For breakfast? Seven Chips Ahoy! cookies (White Fudge Chunky Chips Ahoy, to be exact). Then I sat down and have hardly gotten up since. I've been watching Tron, cruising Facebook, writing things, eating cookies and Redvines, basically having the greatest Saturday of my life. The only great part is that I have yet to interact with another human being today, but I'm sure that will happen before the day is through.
It's about to rain. I can tell because of the smell that's leaking in through my open window: fresh, damp, and clean. Rain. If somebody could bottle the smell of the air before rain, I would wear it as a perfume. That is not a lie.
Today was the first time in a long time that I had the chance to get to know myself.
That's a weird thing to say, you're probably thinking.
And I'd have to agree with you. I think weird thoughts, as does everyone else. You guys just don't share them as often as I do.
What I meant by that statement, though, is that I was alone for once, but not only alone, I was out of my room, walking and reading in the woods. The sun shined it's happy face down on me, I enjoyed the words on the page and the warmth of the sunlight. I was free of obligations for those few hours, and my thoughts were allowed to go anywhere that they wished.
I haven't had time to be alone with myself lately. Sure, I'm alone pretty often, but I'm always doing other things: homework, sleeping, eating... stuff like that. Y'know, the important things in life. That's why this afternoon was so great, because it was just me, thinking my thoughts, being at peace with myself and my surroundings. I felt like I had the strength of character to do anything that I wanted to.
Peace.
Finally.
But then, "oh yes–the world," as Annie Dillard would say (I was reading "The Writing Life" by her as I took my stroll today).
The world happens to me more often than I want it to. I'm such a dreamer, my head constantly in the clouds, and when I come down it's not always the happiest experience. It's not always a bad thing, either; usually, it's so abrupt that I don't have time to process it fully before I'm acting and reacting in the real world again. Guess that's why I'm a little wonky and off-balance most of the time, because I'm always trying to climb around in the clouds, and the real world is always pulling me down by the ankle.
I'm not meaning to complain. I really like my life right now, and I'm not just saying that. I'm so happy so often that when I'm not, it's easy to tell. Maybe I still have those moments when I'm thinking weird thoughts up in my cloudy playground, wondering if they're too weird to share, and then the conversation halts and I get pulled back down into reality.
Hey man, it's all good. That spacey-ness is just a part of who I am. You don't like it? Tough cookies.
Well here I am, sitting in The Nook of the dining hall with my handy dandy laptop. I had to bring it to class today, so I figured might as well get it out while I'm enjoying my sunny morning indoors.
It's been an interesting week, that's for sure. I can't tell where it's headed yet, even though it's already Wednesday.
Hold on, I need to go make a waffle.
...I tried to make a quarter of a waffle, but the batter went everywhere so now I have to eat a whole one. Whoops. At least it's delicious.
So anyway, it's Wednesday, and it's rather chilly. I looked outside and the sun tricked me into thinking that it would be warmer than it actually is. All of the trees that I can see are naked. They must be freezing. Or hibernating. I would hate to be naked in February.
You know what I hate?
Creepy football coaches.
Country music radio.
Rihanna. (MAKE ME FEEEEEEEL LIKE I'M THE ONLY GIRL IN THE WORRLLLDD)
Runny eggs.
Writing in pencil.
When others sneeze. They never fail to spray snot and spit particles into my breathing air.
Bruno Mars. You'd take a grenade for love? You'd run away screaming, little singer boy. And quit writing crappy love songs. You make me sick.
Lame Facebook status updates. If it's not interesting, don't bother updating me on it.
Scary movies/videos/stories.
Math.
You know what I love? Making lists. :)
Valentine's Day is coming up. I don't know what that's supposed to mean to me, other than awesome conversation hearts and couples making out everywhere. One of those things, I enjoy. I'll give you a hint: it's the candy.
But really, I don't hate it. It might be a stupid commercial holiday, and people shouldn't need a special day to show their love for each other, but I don't think the celebration of love can ever be a bad thing. As long as it's love and not lust, or chocolate, or flowers, or poetry. Yuck, poetry.
Now, since I'm feelin' so fly (like a G6)
and since you know exactly what song is playing in the dining hall at the moment
I think it's time for me to end this right here. Have a wonderful Wednesday!
It is 54 degrees Fahrenheit outside (12 degrees Celsius), I only have two classes today, with a huge gap in between. I feel happy and healthy and wonderful. My sweater is very hipster and very legendary.
Look at those swans.
Basically, I feel on top of the world today. I hope it'll carry over to wrestling. (fingers crossed)
I feel like I need to do something amazing with this amazing day I've been given. But what? I have chips and salsa in my tummy, happiness buzzing in my head, an awesome sweater, a beautiful day, piles of homework. Maybe I'll do my homework so I can enjoy tonight, after wrestling.
I guess I can only hope that the amazing thing will come to me.
